No red tape

No administrative red tape and long lines to deal with in Luxembourg. Procedures are fast with the average time to obtain a work permit being between 6 to 8 weeks.
In addition, a change to Luxembourg law has simplified access to the job market for non-EU spouses accompanying their partners for work by eliminating the requirement for a prior work permit.

Upon your arrival, you must notify your presence to the communal administration of your new place of residence within eight days for European Union citizens and three-working days for third-country nationals. Moreover, foreign nationals are subject to the formalities governing the entry and stay of foreigners. Documents must be provided in one of the official languages: Luxembourgish, French or German.

To make things easier for you, the Luxembourg Government has compiled all the administrative procedures on this website: guichet.lu. From there, you can carry out a number of key formalities such as obtaining the declaration form for moving to a Luxembourg municipality as well as registering or transferring a foreign driver’s license.

Bringing your pets with you can also be stressful! There are a number of requirements that need to be adhered to depending on where you are traveling from. Thankfully plenty of information can be found here to help you from bringing your pet here, adoption, insurance food and beyond. Luxembourg also has a strong vet network across the country to ensure that help for your furry friend is only a few minutes away.

Additional tips on making your move smoothly as possible, can be found on Just arrived.

From the day I started, it took me five weeks to complete the paperwork related to my work permit and visa.

Finding a home

If you are looking for accommodation, there are a number of options available. In the beginning, Airbnb's or hostels are a popular short term choice. You can also rent a room for short period of time through LuxFriends or find a fully furnished room on Furnished.lu. If you’re interested in renting a bigger place, you can use popular apps in Luxembourg such as athome.lu or other real estate agencies. You should know that most of the apartments come unfurnished and you sign a fixed-term contract. To simplify your search for a property to rent, fill out this form and your request will be made available to nearly 150 real estate agencies.

Whether you want to live in the city or close to nature, Luxembourg has a lot to offer if you’re looking to buy a property. To facilitate your search, you can contact real estate agencies or relocation agencies offering tailor-made solutions. The latter also offer services facilitating the immigration process to Luxembourg such as administrative formalities, the choice of a school, etc.

While the housing market in Luxembourg is costly, many interesting subsidies are available for residents including the state aid for financing a rental deposit, the possibility of renting subsidized or social housing as well as the possible use of social real estate agencies.

More information on rental assistance can be found on Guichet.lu and Just Arrived. If you’re looking to apply for a mortgage, tune in to this podcast to learn more about what banks are looking for in applications.
